What a Valid Takedown Notice Must Include
To be effective under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)(A), your notice must include all of the following:
- A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on their behalf.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed (or, if multiple works at a single site are covered by one notice, a representative list of them).
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing, with information reasonably sufficient to let us locate it. A Roll post URL or share URL is sufficient.
- Information reasonably sufficient to let us contact you: name, mailing address, telephone number, and email.
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
A notice missing any of these elements may not be a valid § 512(c)(3) notice and may not trigger the response procedures below.

Roll terminates the accounts of users who accumulate multiple substantiated copyright complaints. We track strikes internally and apply them at our discretion based on the severity and recency of the infringements, the volume of valid notices, and the user’s history.
False Claims
17 U.S.C. § 512(f) imposes liability — including damages, costs, and attorneys’ fees — on any person who knowingly materially misrepresents either (a) that material is infringing, or (b) that material was removed or disabled by mistake or misidentification.
We may share notices and counter-notices, including identifying information they contain, with the opposing party and with third parties as required by law.
